Chapter Ten: Goku’s Ambition. Frieza’s Pleasure.

Goku stood looking out over the abyss with fear looming thickly in his heart. It dented his courage, and then he thought of Vegeta, bleeding, and convulsing in terrible pain, and his determination escalated to brave new heights.
He began to lower himself down. As he did, the blackness below hungered and growled. Ripples of crimson black began to stretch and grope for his legs. He had visited King Kai using his teleport ability before this mad exodus, and even the Lord of Worlds was dismayed at Goku’s ultimate decision.
“You’ll die down there, Goku!” King Kai had said, “And you’re alive! Every evil thing in there will want your life-force! And if you don’t die down there first, you’ll go insane!”
Goku wavered in closer. In his hand he held an hour glass filled with sand at the bottom. It would give him exactly half an hour to go in there, find Frieza, and get back out again.

It sounded all good in theory.

Goku flipped the hourglass, and the first grain of sand hit the bottom.
He slipped into the cloying, rumbling shadows of confusing purple, onyx and languid red. Temperatures of instant hot, cold and acidic rain seemed to come at him from every direction. And that was when the voices pelted him. ‘Wring way.’ They whispered. ‘Out. GET OUT!’ Then there were others, who sounded more malicious, bodiless, and insane. ‘Do go here. Do see Her. The One with the dark, toothy grin.’
‘See them. See them ALL.’

Wicked laughter erupted inside Goku’s very eardrums, and he almost dropped the hourglass in the abysmal swirl of ink when he reached up to block his ears from the noise. He started to hum to himself, but suddenly he could think of no tune, no music in which to console himself with. The voices kept barking shrilly at him, lacing him with false orders. Teasing and playing with him.

Finally he touched down on cold, swampy water that stank of soiled meat and infection: an odour he would soon began to smell on Vegeta.

He walked, not sure where he was walking. The swamp deviated into a thin, narrow path that branched out into others. They all lurched outward like cracks, and blackness covered them on all sides. Goku reached out a foot to examine the darkness. There was nothing there, and he almost fell into eternity.

‘Follow me! Follow me, oh gracious one!
‘It’s dark down here. Get me out! Oh please god get me out!’
Goku grit his teeth and walked down a path. He checked the hour glass. He had twenty minutes still.

He saw... things. Creatures, perhaps, or men. He couldn’t really be sure. Something on all fours with streaking white eyes crashed soundlessly through the webbing of ink, and was gone: like a ghost. Eyes peered at him through the dancing shadows, and great tussles of putrid rot slithered from bloodstained grass. He really didn’t like this place.
Things began to gurgle, spit and moan. A clump of fungus stared up at him from the weeds: it had many eyes – all of which were blind.

‘It’s here! Here I say!’
‘No chocolate here. I gotta have me some rice pudding!’
Goku stopped suddenly. His head was hurting. Why was he here again? Why had he risked life and limb to come down to hell? Some vague memory came. Someone had been very sick in his arms. But who? He looked at the hour glass. What did this signify?
“Goku!” This voice was like clean-cut ice compared to the other, creeping voices singing endlessly out of the abyss. “This is King Kai! Remember why you came here! You have very little time! Vegeta is counting on you!”
Everything sprung back into focus. Of course! Vegeta! How could he have been so stupid?
There was no time to thank him. King Kai was probably straining himself as it was just to send him that message.

Goku strode forwards once more, the grains of sand falling down.
Always falling down.

Then Goku had an idea. If this was hell, and it contained all the demons and evil doers of new and old, then they always existed, and never were suited to one particular area. All the evil co-existed, and were always... present. It was just a matter of singling one out.

He stopped short, gathered his courage and beckoned into the void around him as the voices gloated, and the eyes preyed. “Frieza! I summon you! Now!”
He waited. Things clicked and growled, sometimes right behind his ears. He refused to look. Demons were only playing tricks on him, but the longer he stayed down here, the nastier those tricks would become.
‘Says he?’
‘Oui, je suis ici.’
‘Look at him! Look at him, closer, in the dim!’
‘I hungry. I hungry.’

“Frieza!” He bellowed with all his might. He felt an odd wave of satisfaction when the cooing demons seem to quieten under his voice, and their restless bickering ceased.
But then the silence came, and that seemed graver still.

“Frieza! Even as you hide away in this madness like the fickle coward you are, the Lord of this dimension commands you to ANSWER!”

A fog Goku hadn’t even sensed or seen began to clear. The swathes of black parted, and a small rock formation appeared. It looked like it was built out of shiny black skulls with glowing green eyes throbbing out of their dark sockets. A white tail, thick and muscular, was wrapped around the base of it. Goku didn’t need to look twice to know who it was before the veil had fully lifted.

Red eyes shone back. He had forgotten the malice that was assigned to them.
“What are you doing here for, monkey? State your business or crawl back to the vagina you tumbled out from.” The alien chuckled playfully, eyes fastened to the saiyan before him.
Goku coughed to clear his throat, spaced his feet slightly apart and gave a great rippling roar: “I am here for Vegeta!”

“You? Here? For that lousy, no-good-dirty saiyan!” Frieza laughed. The sound was hideous. Black crystals chimed in tune with it. Voices from the darkness whispered and giggled, and Goku turned round, expecting to catch a glimpse of a grinning face, but nothing was there. Only shadows. “Will wonders never cease?” Then his laughter dropped, and hell suddenly felt cold – deathly so. “Why are you here, you piece of shit? Vegeta had his revenge, didn’t he? I found out while in here that it was his dirty monkey son that killed me! His son! Can you believe that? From the future too! But it hurts me not. Because Vegeta is dying as we speak, and that is well.” Frieza narrowed his ruby eyes, and smiled again.

“You monster!” Goku resounded back.

“So, what of it?” That same smile. Goku saw all the madness and hate in that smile. And it almost swallowed him whole.
“Cease with your tricks! I came down here to find a solution to the mark you poured on Vegeta! The Dark Lord of Hell commands that you give to me your secret! Speak now, or doom will grant you silence eternal!”

Frieza stopped smiling at once. “You are mistaken, Kakarott. That is your saiyan name, is it not? Anyway, the Lord here is in fact a She. And She does not care for you or I. We are but squabbling ants here. And why should I hurry? I will be doing Her a favour by keeping you here. Then She will eat your soul. Besides, you’ll find that once you die here, you have access to all kinds of knowledge like me, and I know that the hourglass you hold in your hand is the only link to the outside world. I hope you can remember your way out.”

Goku would not be sidetracked. “What did you do to him? How can I rid him of your hate?”
“You know, just when I think I have you all figured out, you dirty fucking monkeys keep surprising me all the time! Why is Vegeta worth it? Hmm? To come all the way to Her core? To see me? To risk your life and your sanity?”

“Answer me!”

“Shut up!” Frieza stood upon his kopje of skulls and pointed a jagged finger at Goku. “Vegeta deserves it! He ruined my life! He stole my opportunity of immortality! He betrayed me time and time again, and I still would have taken him back! He fouled me! He fouled the Almighty Frieza! And I shall laugh as each organ explodes inside of him! He shall revisit the day I pummelled him until everything inside that dirty monkey was gushing red! You can order me around, golden saiyan, but you will not be able to staunch the gore that will run out of him! Then he will be here, with me! Right where that bitch belongs!” Goku turned away. “I hope the bastard suffers!” Frieza yelled after him, “I hope his bones rupture! And when it does, he’ll think of no one but me!"

He rushed out of there. He swore the darkness played with the sand in the hourglass, and had made it dwindle faster. He could not teleport, such powers did not seem to work here, and so Goku flew upwards, higher and higher. Tears were spilling from his eyes. But he did not cry because of the horrors clawing at him from below, or the profanities Frieza had accosted him with. He was crying because Vegeta was going to be in for a rough ride, and he still didn’t know what to do to save him. If the mark targeted the prince’s heart, well, then there was no hope.

He reached the surface just as the last grain of sand hit the pile at the bottom of the hourglass.
